The Solar Decathlon Europe Competition
Initiated in 2002 by the United States Department of Energy, the Solar Decathlon (SD) is a university-level student competition for resource-responsible and energy-efficient architecture and engineering in the building sector. The competition challenges universities from all over the world to design, build and operate a solar-powered and energetically self-sufficient home equipped with advanced technologies, and designed to the highest standards of sustainability.
SUM
In an already complex world, where the ever-increasing technological advances impose hectic daily rhythms and contribute to the detachment of human from the environment, there is an urgent need for humans to return to nature, to its simplicity and reconnect with it. SUM wants to cross this boundary and create a new environment where humans, plants and animals all flourish; an environment where each of the groups benefits from the presence of the other. This is what we call: Symbiosis. This comes with two challenges:
1. One Million Home Challenge: To facilitate the population growth in the Netherlands and the enormous housing shortage, 1 million extra homes are needed by 2030
2. Climate-Neutral by 2050: To combat climate change, the Dutch government wants to become climate neutral by 2050.There are 1,5 million homes that should become more sustainable.

Amsterdam is dealing with a discontinuity between a gentrified urban centre and a disadvantaged periphery, caused by the presence of different spatial concepts. The centre follows the concept of centralisation and therefore has fine grain, marked by the richness of connections between the different scaled grids. Centrality happens on the streets and so these streets, including the radials, function as high streets full of vital urban life. The periphery, however, follows the concept of decentralisation and has a coarse grain with a disengagement between the different scaled-grids. The vivid high streets of the centre change into traffic arteries, characterised by a thinness of experience of public space. Centrality happens in self-contained pockets and neighbourhoods are culturally and socially homogeneous. In between centre and periphery the Ringzone is located, which is actually a grey zone dominated by the metropolitan scale.

Because of the reform in the dutch healthcare system in 2015, more and more vulnerable people need to live independently as long as possible. With the tense housing market and raising housing prices, this group of people are having trouble finding a suitable dwelling in Amsterdam. The social housing market, their main source for housing, is stuck. The municipality of Amsterdam therefore has written a report/program (Programma Huisvesting Kwetsbare doelgroepen) that should encourage responsible parties to respond and provide more dwellings for those people. These developments result in a demand of suitable dwellings for vulnerable target groups in which they could live independently and fully participate in society. In fact this graduation project is about more than just a housing scheme for vulnerable people. It also stresses the importance of a city in which there is space for any individual, regardless their abilities, limitations, income, age: an inclusive city.

Buildings consist of many components such as installations, kitchens, bathrooms, etc. These can be replaced by circular components during maintenance and renovation, leading to a bottom-up implementation of a circular economy in the built environment.
In project CIK, the TU Delft, Chalmers, AMS Institute, industry partners and clients develop one such circular component: The Circular Kitchen. In four years the CIK will be developed to a prototype and market-ready product which will be implemented in demonstration exemplars as part of deep retrofit projects in the Netherlands and Sweden. In the CIK the design, business and industrial model are developed in parallel to each other.

Durability of buildings, the capacity to provide functional usable space for a certain time, as a concept of sustainable architecture forms the starting point and motivation for this project. As part of this main approach, the future function strategy should be introduced. This strategy contains an existing building which will be redesigned in a way that it can serve multiple functions during time and at the same time, with minimal interventions needed to accomplish a function change. The future function strategy is intent to be independent from a location to be widely usable. However, in the end the location will demand the desirable functions. At this project, the choice of the selected functions is determined by the particular case of the marine terrain, where various buildings will need a new function after the marine establishment has left in 2018. Specific for the marine terrain, residential and commercial space are the two functions which the building minimally should be able to accommodate. Designing a building applicable for multiple functions means that it should be able to meet the requirements of these different functions.

For the past two years we have been involved in the 1 Mililon Homes project in many ways, but it does not end there. The project finds follow up in two forms: Flagship Space for Housing (Ruimte voor Wonen) and Vision Team Housing (Wonen). Both continue to work on the housing challenge of 1 million homes by 2030, but from a slightly different perspective.
Flagship Space for Living will showcase their knowledge and innovations and actively disseminate them. For example by participating in debates (or by organizing them theirselves), making podcasts, videos and writing accessible papers.
Vision Team Housing focuses on the collaboration with other TU Delft faculties on this issue, in order to get an overview, which knowledge and innovations of the TU are relevant, which gaps there are in our solutions and where the TU Delft can or should take a clear position in the debate and where we can better remain open.
Check out what the TU Delft's other vision teams are working on!

Housing affordability is a topic of all times, however, on the current Dutch housing market it is an increasing urgency and thus increasingly harder to find to many Dutch households. The housing shortage, combined with the booming economy, are causing housing prices to rise relatively fast. Although the housing market is pressured in many different regions and is affecting many households, especially middle income groups seem to suffer from the situation. These households generally earn too much to be eligible for social housing, but too little to obtain a regular mortgage. They are therefore located between the social rented sector and full-price homeownership, and increasingly have to rely on private rented housing (in Dutch also referred to as middeldure huur), where rent prices are often disproportionate to their income.
A solution to bridge this ‘affordability gap’ are intermediate housing tenures, however, they are no longer applied on a larger scale due to the change of the Housing Act in 2015, as housing associations since then have to focus on their core activity (providing social housing). However, especially when housing affordability is becoming an increasing urgency to a growing group of households, it is remarkable that the main type of providers are being limited in their possibilities to do so. The main aim of this research therefore is to explore the potential enhancement of the Dutch intermediate housing sector, so that the provision of these tenures could be stimulated again.

Housing in many European countries has become unaffordable for many. In fact, it is now considered to be one of the most important national issues in Europe and its solution is proving very challenging. Affordability and sustainability of housing have been addressed separately, from various disciplinary perspectives (e.g. architecture and planning, economics, sociology) and realms (e.g. policy-making, sustainable development, urban planning, green building). However, recent research indicate that it is necessary to consider the affordability and the sustainability of housing as complementary and interrelated aspects which need to be addressed with a transdisciplinary approach, by combining academic disciplines and engaging non-academic sectors in a common production of knowledge.

Hundreds of thousands of people are on waiting lists for years, housing prices are skyrocketing and the number of homeless people has doubled in ten years. The problem is not stagnating, it continues to spiral further out of control and threatens the future of these hundreds of thousands of people. There can no longer be any waiting for politicians to actively pursue or turn a blind eye to this mismanagement. The emergency brake must be pulled and there must be a change in policy.
It was therefore time for a nationwide movement that says "up to here and no further." At the end of 2021 and in the beginning of 2022, many cities in the Netherlands went into action with housing protests. The cities spoke out against the selling off of our housing rights, against the greedy rich who are getting richer in silence, against the suffering of hundreds of thousands of Dutch people and against the expulsion of original inhabitants from their own neighborhoods through racist and classist housing policies. These housing protests are a call for solidarity with all tenants and buyers who are collective victims of this crisis.

In the city centre of Almere Haven almost 40% of the public space consists out of unattended backside areas with no spatial quality. With an increasing vacancy in the plinth, the dark unattended corners and parking dominate the street view. It is the place where the bedroom windows meet the noisy delivery vans, with in between the back doors leading to homes. Do these spaces need a redevelopment? If so, how?
Besides that, cities are getting bigger and bigger, in height and hectare. Eventually, there is a limited possible growth and there is a need to look for other solutions to densify. In times where the demand for new homes is reminiscent of the ‘Volkshuisvesting’ of the ’70s and ’80s, we are obliged to look creatively at our current housing stock and urban infill. Our stock exists for 33% (CBS 2016) out of houses built between the ’70s and the ’80s. Which consists mainly out of family homes. In the building complex, the family homes can easily be divided into studios or two-room apartments to increase the density and variation of housing in the building. Could these backside a possible location for densification?

Nowadays, we are back to square one, elderly live independently for longer and are forced to be more self-reliant again, just like they were before the Second World War, before the emergency law of Willem Drees. The traditional welfare state is changing into a participation society. In 2013 King Willem-Alexander stated: “Everyone who is able, is asked to take responsibility for his or her own life” (Rijksoverheid, 2013). As a result, those in need of care receive care at home as much as possible, instead of in an institution. In many cases they rely on their social network. Friends and family then become informal caregivers. This demand for care will increase together with the growing amount of elderly in the Netherlands, aging. In addition, the change of the traditional welfare state into a participation society strengthened the loneliness of the elderly. In conclusion, the housing market of elderly requires a new layout. The tendency towards a more participatory society asks for a living environment where multiple generations live closer together. By accommodating multiple generations under one roof within a participation supporting, non-institutional environment, the elderly live independently for longer, together with securing their integration into society.

On behalf of 10 housing associations, Netwerk Conceptueel Bouwen and Aedes, ESTI (Ecosystem Thinking Institute) is challenging the market.
Housing associations in the Netherlands are faced with a major task to accelerate the construction of 150,000 new social rental homes.
Wonen Zuid, Area, Domijn, Tiwos, Zayaz, Maasvallei, Antares, ZOwonen, Wonen Limburg and Alwel are currently unable to offer a profitable new-build home for 1- and 2-person households. Together with NCB and Aedes, they are looking for an innovation breakthrough in affordable new construction of approximately 4000 homes for 1- and 2-person households in accordance with PMC 2 and 7 from De Woon Standaard. These are homes with a rent below the first capping limit of € 634 (price level January 2021)

The 1M Homes Initiative is an interdisciplinary platform of researchers of the Faculty of Architecture and the Built Environment that aims to promote the development of knowledge towards an inclusive, affordable, climate friendly and healthy living environment.
There is an urgent need for affordable housing solutions in the Netherlands before 2030. However, the focus should not only be on producing new dwellings, but rather on creating homes and neighbourhoods that meet the needs of the future population.
In urban regions, housing production lags behind and real estate prices are growing, resulting in a shortage of affordable homes, especially for starters. Moreover, changes in the housing provision have led to a lack of affordable homes in non-urban regions as well.
In response to these challenges, the 1M Homes Initiative brings together experts from various fields to ensure a coherent vision across scales and disciplines. Social, economic, geographical, technological and environmental aspects are equally important. Through living labs we conduct live scale projects and experiments in cooperation between researchers, educators, the public sector, housing associations and society.
The 1M Homes exposition is a result of all the work that has been made for the last two years for the 1M Homes Initiative. In this exposition different kinds of research projects, graduation projects and other projects outside of the TU Delft that in some way relate to the 1M Homes quest have come together and will show you the urgence of the need for enough affordable housing solutions.

The COVID-19 crisis has made working from home (WFH) a routine for many of us. Many experts expect that WFH will remain a new normal form of work even after the pandemic is over. Therefore, the investigation of the current WFH environment and telecommtuers’ responses to these new type of work environment is an urgent and practical research topic.
In this exhibition, some interesting findings from an online survey of home workspaces and WFH experiences conducted in the Netherlands (n=170) and South Korea (n=196) at the end of 2021 are presented. In addition, a research plan for the VR experiment, which will be carried out as the next phase of this project, is introduced.

The Circular Economy (CE) in the built environment has gained ever more attention as discussions around the threats of global warming, resource scarcity, environmental impacts, and energy emissions intensify. The building industry accounts for approximately 40% of carbon emissions and reusing vacant buildings – thus slowing resource loops – is one of the strategies on offer to address this. However, research shows that the adaptive reuse of vacant buildings also contributes to their embodied emissions if the process is not fully aligned with CE principles. In addition, the CE is often conceived of as a binary outcome: either projects are fully circular or not circular at all. Identifying how far a project still has to go to become fully circular is an essential step in closing this gap, but how can this be done? This research contains an examination of the processes which are considered to be of importance at the inception of a project. In it, the results of two case studies, exploratory interviews with experts, and a literature review are used to design a decision support framework (DSF) to support decision-makers in housing associations in pursuing greater self-sustainability in their assets. This research also includes an exploration of existing, complementary CE methodologies, and an illustration of how they can be applied to adaptive reuse projects. This involves an examination of the complexity of these CE methodologies, and the delivery of a series of practical steps to achieving a low, medium or high degree of circularity. Using the DSF, an evaluation of a circular project in the Netherlands is then carried out, and recommendations and a step-by-step plan for achieving a completely circular project are set out.

The Individual household will represent almost 75% of the household increase in the Netherlands in the coming years. This lead to an increase in the sense of isolation among citizens of all ages. Therefore, there is the urge of housing, specifically designed for this target group, which avoid isolation and foster social interaction. Additionally, it should be clear that we have to move from the current linear economy to a circular one where resources are reused multiple times instead of wasted after the first use. By combining these social and technical challenges the project aims tot answer the current need of housing for individuals inviting inhabitants to make full use of the shared spaces. Embracing the field of design for disassembly, the building also aims to be constantly able to adapt to the ever-changing needs of the society, avoiding wastefulness of resources while fostering their reuse.

The past generation has built more than all previous generations combined. The houses got bigger, families got smaller and our lifestyle more consuming. Times however have changed so that nowadays we are faced with multiple social problems – such as aging and loneliness – and environmental problems. Living more social and reducing consumption is therefore crucial for our society nowadays, and suitable for the proposed location in the neighbourhood 'De Werven' in 'Almere Haven'. The focus on relationships, community and reducing resources led to the subject of cohousing; a residential community that shares resources, facilities and that undertakes joint activities. This type of living suits – and can even improve – social cohesion within Almere Haven and the feeling of being part of something. The original thought of ‘De Werven’ was to create small, social neighbourhoods within a larger residential neighbourhood. Implementing cohousing within this typology therefore suits the original intention. By changing the housing typologies a community is realised for different family situations suitable for all ages. For the transformation the present existing materials will be harvested and reused to establish a circular and low-energy living environment. An environment in which the individual is just as important as the community.

The transition to a circular economy in the built environment is one of the major societal challenges. The aim of a circular economy is to use less material, to use components for longer and to close raw material and product cycles. Buildings consist of different components, such as facades, kitchens and bathrooms. By replacing these components with circular components during natural maintenance and renovation moments, the housing stock can be made circular step by step.
The 'REHAB' project focuses on the development of two circular building components for housing renovation: a circular shell and a circular extension. In addition, circular design and assessment tools are being developed within this project.
The Circular Shell and Circular Extension are being developed in co-creation between TU Delft, AMS Institute, housing associations and construction partners.

The worldwide urbanization is resulting in increasingly densified urban areas, aiming for the development of more space efficient cities. The increase of urban inhabitants, also in the Netherlands, has put vast pressure on the demand of housing in the city. Mainly affected by the Dutch housing crisis are young and elderly people looking for mid-segment rental housing, of which the availability of affordable housing is problematic. Simultaneously, Dutch demographics are changing wherein an extensive increase of one-person households is expected. With a traditional housing stock serving mainly one-family households, the vast shortages and the increasing demand, this future mismatch on the housing market frames the current issue. With the emergence of a new economic landscape, the sharing economy provides new insights in possible solutions for the housing crisis: the concept of shared housing of which commercial co-living. This raises the question what this concept comprises of and how the characteristics of this concept can influence upon the affordability of housing and perhaps stimulate developers by providing a profitable development and operation. Through the diminishing of private space but addition of larger communal areas, the concept of co-living can decrease rental costs but increase number of units, possibly serving the user-affordability and developers-profitability. Through research into the concept of co-living, a thorough analysis of state-of-the-art examples and subsequently framing the characteristics of co-living. An analysis upon the level of influence of these characteristics in regards of the users-affordability and developers-profitability, give an initial insight in the economic opportunities of co-living on the commercial housing market.

This master thesis is the final result of my graduation project, a year of researching the field of urban planning and design, facing the complexity of urban regeneration processes.
Because of the current complexity of this urban regeneration, it is important to research the current processes, to see if they work as efficiently as possible. This research takes Rotterdam as a case study, a large innovative, and developing city of the Netherlands. Both top-down and bottom-up perspectives are revised to improve the current plans and processes for the regeneration of Rotterdam. It is time for urban planners and designers to make a shift in the development of planning strategies in a way they create a more sustainable and durable way of urban development by using the existing qualities of each specific area. In this way, our profession can contribute to the improvement of the living environment and conditions of citizens. This thesis looks for an improvement in involving citizens in the planning processes of the municipality. By reviewing local citizens’ demands, and combining this with the structure of the municipality, a new urban regeneration plan is developed, taking all the different actors into account.

Traditional policies do not respond properly to the strategies and behaviours of vulnerable households and are less effective in reducing inequalities. UPLIFT aims to develop a Reflexive Policy Agenda through participatory co-creation: with the inclusion of vulnerable policy beneficiaries, the project will yield context-specific, flexible, adaptable policies, with appropriate feedback mechanisms.

We are in the middle of a housing crisis that is mainly affecting young people.
The government has let go of control, but the market is not solving the housing shortage. Meanwhile, homelessness is on the rise. So much so that the Netherlands now has 'self-reliant homeless people'. These homeless people sometimes just have a job and sleep in their car. The housing crisis is complete.
There are no quick solutions, but waiting for politics doesn't feel right either. So where and how can you still afford to live in the Netherlands? How do we arrive at 1 million new and sustainable living places by 2030?
'VPRO Tegenlicht' will tackle the housing shortage by the horns in 2021 and is looking for housing pioneers who want to accelerate the housing crisis. Who contributes to the creation or construction of 1 million affordable housing spaces? Who is lobbying for lower rents or broad public housing?
'VPRO Tegenlicht' gathered 153 residential pioneers who are helping to solve the housing crisis.

Within the major housing challenge, collaborative housing forms are an important alternative. That's what 'Project Together!' is all about, with a varied program that invites a broad debate about new forms of housing based on principles of inclusiveness, sustainability and long-term value development. It is a call to make a city together. The program takes place in September and October and consists of an exhibition, inspiring lectures, in-depth seminars and stimulating hybrid events.
The financialization of real estate, which has turned housing into a commodity, poses major challenges to the quality of life in cities. The social rental sector has long waiting lists in many large cities, while the owner-occupied sector is inaccessible to many target groups. Over the next 10 years, 1 million homes must be built to meet the growing demand. Collaborative housing forms are an accessible alternative to the existing social rental and owner-occupied sector, whereby the scarce land is used more efficiently. It is also popular: an estimated 5% of the Dutch population wants to live with other households. At the same time, this form of housing is not yet easy to realize.
By allowing international and national stakeholders (such as bankers, politicians, experts by experience and academics) to enter into a debate, the Project Together creates room for knowledge development and concrete change. The program is structured around three themes: why is collaborative living relevant, how can we realize such forms of living and who should take which actions to make the cities of the future more collaborative?

“Urban woods” is a project that investigates the problems of the segregation and social exclusion in the cities today. Urban environments become more and more diverse, which often leads to lack of social cohesion on the neighborhood scale. This master thesis focuses on the target group of expats and answers the questions of creating inclusive urban surroundings for a diverse group of residents. It investigates the theme of collective living and social responsibility for the inhabited spaces. Design focus lies in providing spaces that enhance social interactions between the residents and spaces for their individual appropriation. Since designing for diverse cultures does not refer to one dwelling system, the building offers maximum flexibility in order to provide appropriate apartments for future tenants. This strategy is based on the concept of open building introduced by John Habraken. The concept of responsibility for the inhabited spaces is also reflected in the integration of architecture and nature. The building provides biodiversity and aims to put focus on the current issues of the climate change. Architecture of the building integrates with nature and creates a healthy and sustainable living environment not only for people, but also several animal species.
